Gansler candidates and Scott L. role in the Daily Record Act employees in our offices last week for lunch and two-party (and we are happy to report, civil protection) on-the-record discussion about their views and goals. Here is what we learned.
QUESTION: During one of the pre-primary debates, then-candidate Stuart Simms both said you want as a “super-bulls.” How do you see the role of the Attorney General? DOUG Gansler: I think it is a law enforcement position in the sense that … it is not a legislative position. We are not there to the laws and all our authority in the way we want to use it, but in fact, we have to follow the law in the way the law is written and law enforcement — – Whether we enforce the laws against the polluter, against insurance companies, corporate against fraud, against the supply companies, or against criminals and gangs, it is my opinion that it is a law enforcement position. And we have to enforce the law in the civil arena, as well. SCOTT ROLE: The difficult part about running for this office, a lot of time, you have to compartmentalize what you on what your platform, sometimes in less than five minutes …. So, I have this emphasis [prosecution] things, although there’s a lot more on the job and more that I want to do …. I think the # 1 role of government is to protect its citizens, and I think in some cases … we do not. I prosecuted a case in Frederick, where an individual will receive a 10-year sentence was to leave after three. He was a sex offender - and within a week, he raped and murdered a 9-year-old boy. I go to all homicide scenes in Frederick County … and I remember with him to see and think, “You know, we have to do something about it.” … I also believe we need to combat the problem of gang in Maryland. … The road prosecutors and police the road in Maryland did not have the tools they need to combat the gang problems. We have no RICO statute. We do not have a continuation of the criminal enterprise statute. …. There are a few other law enforcement aspects er …, but I was a civil lawyer for four years before he State Attorney, so I do bring some civil experience on the table, and this is at least equally important.
