Wanted Criminals Surrendered in Schuylkill County

Accused criminals in Schuylkill County were offered a free pass, of sorts, Friday.

Judges have issued bench warrants for the arrests of 200 people who have not shown up for court. Friday about 40 of those people turned themselves in to authorities.

Alfernando DeGotto is accused of trying to take metal scrap but he got in a jam when he didn’t show up for court. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest and just this week, police picked arrested him.

Traditionally when a bench warrant is issued for someone’s arrest and they’re stopped for, say, a traffic violation, they are immediately taken to jail.

About 40 people accused of non violent crimes got a break by turning themselves in to court authorities in Pottsville.

“It was basically saying if you turn yourselves in we’re going to give that consideration and we’re not necessarily going to put you in jail. We’re going to use that as a factor in your favor and get you’re case resolved,” explained District Attorney Jim Goodman.

Jennifer Cole of Maryland is accused of passing bad checks. “I already paid my restitution so it wasn’t much. I just had to have that finished.  I had to get it finished that’s all because I missed my court date,” Cole said.

Many of the people who turned themselves in feel relieved that they’ve come clean.

“I don’t want to have it looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life, to clear everything,” said Randall Snyder of Minersville. “I thought I’d be incarcerated.”

“I was totally unaware that I had a bench warrant until I read it in the newspaper. I thought it was great that they gave us the opportunity to come in instead of going to jail,” said Matt Hower of Mahanoy City.

Most of those who surrendered were released on bail. They will return to court next month to be sentenced.
