Mr. Rice last chance donors’ conference for the Palestinians to avoid bankruptcy
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said a donors’ conference Monday the Palestinian government was the “last hope” to avoid bankruptcy and asked the swift and generous international aid.
Rice said the U.S. government has pledged U.S. $ 555 million (€ 382.5 million) for 2008. The money, but also about U.S. $ 400 million (€ 275 million) that the White House announced, but has not yet been approved by Congress.
“The Palestinian Authority is in a serious fiscal crisis,” she says. “This conference is literally the government last hope to avoid bankruptcy.

The Palestinian government is requesting U.S. $ 5.6 billion (€ 3.8 billion) over three years in the largest conference of donors in more than a decade.
