Md. President of the Senate will not return Gay Unions
The Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. said yesterday that he would not support the right to legalise homosexual marriages or unions of civil service in Maryland, signs, supporters of gay marriage is that their resistance campaign by the courts to the General Assembly.
Supporters promised to continue their pursuit of full rights of marriage in the law of the state’s highest court upheld Maryland’s 34-year-old law prohibiting the marriage of same Tuesday. But Miller said he sees no reason for changing the law.
“People may introduce accounts they want,” Miller (D-Calvert) said. “But at this stage, I do not think the votes, there is a change of legislation …. The charges on human beings who think it is necessary to explain the need for change.”
Maryland Democrats control the General Assembly and the office of governor, but their opinions on same-sex unions are multifaceted and nuanced. Many would prefer to consider the granting of rights and benefits for homosexual couples not to discuss whether the state should sanction their unions. Some say they prefer to avoid privately that the issue to a vote.
Dir Martin O’Malley (D) said he supports civil unions, but he has a low profile in the case.
Gay favourable prospects are better in the house of the Assembly of Delegates, the votes more than the Liberal Senate, and three openly gay members. A large delegation of Montgomery County, for example, “would support gay marriage,” House majority leader S. Barve Kumar (D-Montgomery) has spoken.
However, the legislator black group, as a general rule, one of the most reliable voting blocks of progressive, is deeply divided on the issue, and will torn between traditional religious beliefs and his commitment to the rights of citizens on the other side.
“This vote is not easy,” said Del. Dereck E. Davis (D-Prince George’s), a black member is the chairman of the Foreign Economic Council. “We have never occupation of a vote on marriage. “Davis said he would not support the marriage of same sex unions or civil service.
The Court of Appeals “4, 3 Decision Tuesday that the ban on same-sex marriage does not discriminate against gay couples or deny these fundamental rights has greatly on both sides of the issue surprised. Supporters and opponents said they s expect that the court strike laws defining or find the Constitution and say that the legislature find a solution.
In the absence of a direction to modify the court, several legislators said a new law on the issue of right of marriage could have given an impetus to penalty.
“This is clearly an upsurge of fighting,” said Dan Furmansky, Executive Director of Equality Maryland, a partner in the application of the American Civil Liberties Union against the state, on behalf of 19 gay men and women in the year 2004.
The outlook may be even worse for supporters of a revision of the ban on same-sex marriage. A proposal by the nature of the complaint tight killed by the Republicans and in committees for the past three years, it is unlikely, somewhere, the legislator said.
A great unknown is the governor. Advocates for gay rights say it is for him to drive. But tell O’Malley aid, it is unlikely that civil unions Champion public service, whether now that his administration is consumed with the state budget deficit, or in the future.
